Gatwick station upgrade project
The client:
Costain
The challenge:
The existing Gatwick railway station was not meeting demand, resulting in overcrowding on platforms and inadequate accessibility from train to plane.
The solution:
DEG (working with Costain) created a 4D model to help the construction teams to plan and execute the works, whilst giving familiarity to the site and feeding back the plan to stakeholders.
Providing eight new escalators and five new lifts have significantly improved accessibility. The new lifts and escalators, as well as four new stairways and wider platforms, have made it easier and faster for travellers to get from the train station to the airport.
Easier transition from train to plane benefits passengers across the network, allowing trains to operate on time by eliminating congestion and queues on platforms that cause delays.
The current station concourse is now larger, with more information systems, more ticket gates, and a dedicated passenger assistance point, boosting the passenger experience.
The new concourse now serves as the new entry to the southern airport terminal, with the old concourse serving as the entrance to the railway station. The station concourse, station footbridges, and South Terminal linkspan have been renovated to offer a smooth one-way connection to the airport from the train station.
All of construction work was completed in a 24/7, 365 operational environment.
